Breath Technologies Submits SBIR Grant Proposal to NIH for Ground-breaking Mind-Body Intervention Study on Anxiety.

Tampa: Breath Technologies, a promising healthcare technology start-up, has officially submitted a Small Business Innovation Research or SBIR grant proposal to the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a transformative research project focused on evaluating the efficacy of their cutting-edge platform in mind-body interventions for anxiety.

This ground-breaking study has the potential to revolutionize anxiety treatment and empower individuals to take control of their mental well-being. Anxiety disorders affect millions of people worldwide, causing significant distress and impairing daily functioning. While traditional treatment options such as medication and therapy have proven effective, there is a growing need for innovative approaches that can augment and enhance existing therapies.

That’s where Breath Technologies comes in. We at Breath Technologies aim to leverage the power of our advanced data platform and the pioneering and patent-pending Pneumö™ device to offer a promising alternative for anxiety management.

Led by a distinguished team of professionals and researchers from Breath Technologies, the University of South Florida Innovation in Mental Health Lab (iMH), and Satori Scientific, the proposed study aims to gather actionable data-driven insights into the impact of mind-body interventions on anxiety reduction. By integrating state-of-the-art technology with mindfulness practices, including non-invasive respiratory effects, the study seeks to provide individuals with accessible and evidence-based tools to better regulate their anxiety levels.

What are our founders saying?

Breath Technologies Cofounders, Suzanne B. Diaz and Aaron Ward, were thrilled to pursue an NIH initiative grant that had such a wonderful match to the power tools of the Breath Technologies platform. Now, both are waiting eagerly for the potential opportunities that lie ahead.

Suzanne Diaz, Cofounder of Breath Technologies, feels analyzing breathing patterns can serve as a vital indicator of anxiety levels. “Breath is the bridge between the mind and the body. It is the intersection of physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Monitoring the breath rate and patterns provides valuable insights into one’s emotional state and serves as a vital indicator of anxiety levels,” Suzanne Diaz explained.

If the grant proposal is approved, the study will be conducted in close collaboration with renowned institutions, including IBM, the University of South Florida Innovation in Mental Health Lab, Satori Scientific, TD Synnex and NAGL MedTec Manufacturing. Together with Breath Technologies, the research team aims to gather comprehensive and actionable data on the effectiveness of the Breath Technologies platform, paving the way for evidence-based anxiety management strategies.

The Breath Technologies platform, meticulously designed with user-friendliness and effectiveness in mind, utilizes biofeedback sensors to monitor various physiological indicators such as heart rate and breathing patterns. Through real-time feedback and interactive exercises, individuals can learn to modulate their physiological responses, fostering a state of calmness and balance.

Aaron expressed that the platform developed by Breath Technologies surpasses mere monitoring capabilities by offering a holistic approach to overall well-being. “The Breath Technologies platform goes beyond simple monitoring; it provides a comprehensive approach to well-being, allowing individuals to understand and influence their physical and mental health with their breathing patterns,” Breath Technologies Cofounder Aaron Ward said.

What is the aim of the study?

As part of its research plan, Breath Technologies has outlined its primary aim, which is divided into three parts:

  1. It involves conducting internal laboratory testing in preparation for an observational study;
  2. It includes testing system functionality, creating an original awareness practice, and developing specialized Pneumö™ devices to measure key physiological indicators;
  3. These steps will ensure accurate data collection and enhance the effectiveness of the mind-body interventions.

Besides, Breath Technologies is also set to pilot-test their platform through an observational study. Working with Dr. Brian Bunnell, Director of the University of South Florida Innovation in Mental Health Lab, the study will simulate a commercial platform using telehealth protocols for remote patient monitoring. System performance will be evaluated through technical logs, software tools, feedback, and comfort surveys.

How Breath Technologies’ collaborators will help:

To ensure a robust product, Breath Technologies will seek a 360-degree review from its partners:

  • IBM will help Breath Technologies to harness the power of AI using Watson Studios;
  • TD Synnex will review data collection and output;
  • The USF Innovation in Mental Health Lab will provide insights for system design related to anxiety management;
  • NAGL Medtec will improve device performance;
  • Satori Scientific will assist with custom sensors.

A summary report will incorporate partner feedback and identify potential platform improvements.

Breath Technologies remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation and making a positive impact on mental health. With the submission of this grant proposal to the NIH, in partnership with the University of South Florida, they reaffirm their commitment to revolutionizing anxiety treatment and improving the lives of individuals worldwide.
