How Does Box Breathing Help and Work?

December 22, 2022

Sometimes the simplest things are the most powerful tools of life. How? Did you know that box breathing is a breathing technique utilized by the US Navy Seals? Navy Seal members are placed in high stress scenarios and box breathing is a very impactful breath technique used to aid in stress management. A form of yogic deep breathing, box breathing refers to a box which has four sides, which represents a breath count of four for total four times – like four counts of breathing in, 4 counts of holding your breath, 4 counts to exhale and four counts of holding after you exhale.

Box breathing is very powerful and has a potent effect on our physiology. It lowers stress, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, calms the mind and also keeps gastrointestinal problems like indigestion in control. Learn more about the benefits of box breathing by integrative medicine specialist Melissa Young, from the Cleveland Clinic in this article.
