Studies have revealed that the indirect effect of using the Cold Therapy breathing technique for relief of chest tube pain in cases of edema, muscle spasm, and inflammation of nerves decreases the pressure, especially in patients with chest tube insertion. Sufficient pain control is significant for mobilization and effective respiratory system performance for such patients. Cold Therapy before any deep breathing and coughing exercises for patients with chest tubes has shown effective results.
Research conducted on patients with chest tube pain showed that demographic variables of age, sex, marital status, medical history, smoking, alcohol consumption habits, and education did not significantly differ in chest tube pain management before and after practicing the Cold Therapy breathing technique and exercise.
However, the big issue remains that the patients who participated in the study did not realize the efficacy of chest tube pain relief by practicing the breathing techniques and exercises, primarily due to being unaware of their breathing except when they faced difficulty or pain.
